Sunbeams, also known as crepuscular rays, are a fascinating optical phenomenon.
They appear as beams of sunlight that seem to radiate from the sun, often seen through gaps in clouds or between objects like mountains or buildings.
Here's how they form:
Sunlight's Journey: Sunlight travels in straight lines. When it reaches Earth's atmosphere, it encounters particles like dust, smoke, or water droplets.
Scattering: These particles scatter the sunlight in all directions.
Obstruction: When sunlight encounters an obstruction like a cloud or building, it creates a shadow.
Visibility: The scattered sunlight that passes around the obstruction becomes visible as a beam, contrasting against the darker shadow.
Why Do Sunbeams Disappear So Easily?
Sunbeams are transient because they depend on specific conditions:
Sun Position: The sun needs to be low in the sky, as at sunrise or sunset, for the beams to be most noticeable.
Atmospheric Conditions: The presence of particles in the atmosphere is essential for scattering the sunlight. If the air is too clean or the particles are too small, the beams may not be visible.
Obstructions: Clouds, buildings, or other objects need to be in the right position to create the contrast that makes the beams stand out.

Testimonials
"I've been enjoying Mike's photos online for years. His photos have a way of making things very familiar to me more beautiful than I remember. They bring me a lot of joy. He helps me appreciate the beauty around here. I finally own one of "Tree Farm Trail" photos; now I have the beauty in my home. Mike takes an ordinary, familiar landscape and makes it absolutely beautiful."
